Time to Remove the Managers

Yes, it’s time to say goodbye to the managers that work in our organization along with the ones that have taken control within ourselves. There is a time and place for everything and now they must pack their bags and hit the road. Am I sad to see them go? Kind of because most don’t see the writing on the wall. They will stroll down memory lane only to find obsolescence at the end.

I will miss those funny ole sayings they have like, “I got it” or “I’m good” and “No reason to discuss any changes or new things because it’s already covered.” And you know what? Lately they are right. Because that fish will never fly.

The good news is that the focus can now move solely towards the leadership playbook for the future and with no time to waste.

Why the urgency to get moving quickly towards the start of the phases that need to be accomplished? Two simple letters…AI. Now before you go writing me off as one of those nuts who think Artificial Intelligence is going to change everything…. Well, I am, and it will! Want to see some writing on that wall?

Ever heard of Nvidia? They are the chip maker for AI. Those semi-conductors are key to the efforts with Artificial Intelligence and their stock had more than tripled by last week. Still not convinced> How about Amazon getting in the AI game and starting a program called “AI Ready” which plans on training at least 2 million people by 2025 in basic to advanced AI.

Now this doesn’t mean you need to grab the kids and packs of Ramen noodles on the way down to your grandfather’s bunker…far from it. What you see and feel is called “opportunity”, not let’s play “bury your head in the sand and pretend it doesn’t exist”. As Leaders, when you hear it knock, you better answer!

The first step we take is laying out a plan that will keep advancing your business as a leader in our industry. What exactly does that look like you ask? Well let’s just say that it is going to be a very fluid journey at times so if you are looking for a concrete plan with guardrails, that’s just not going to be realistic. It’s all going to be about being flexible and having the ability to change with dynamic speed. Sure, you don’t get there is one big step, but you can with a number of smaller ones.

Let’s start with Leadership, Culture, and the Team.

Phase 1

  • First thing as a leader is check your pulse. It’s a really good sign if you have one! In fact, it should be rapid because you are stepping into the unknown.
  • Second, check the fire in your belly because you are going to have to go all in if you want to achieve true change.
  • Lastly and certainly the hardest; open your mind to change. Too many leaders spend time on why it won’t work instead of how we can make it work.

If you want to send the right signals to your team, you better show them you are a change leader and not stuck in some halfway home. If they sense a fake, their plan will be to play along with it until you come to your senses and get back to your old self.

You have to remember that people as a whole are skeptical of change. First, they typically don’t warm up to the idea that they will have to get out of their comfort zone. Second, they have been preprogrammed to believe that most change is temporary. They have been to way too many meetings where change was talked about and didn’t “stick” compared to the ones that did.

You are going to have to earn their faith over time by doing what you say you are going to do. And you can bet your bottom asteroid that you will be tested on that front.

In my last blog I talked a lot about EQ or Emotional Intelligence. Many believe (me included) that is the most important factor in being a great business leader. Now many will argue that it can be learned but that most people will not apply it. Maybe, maybe not.

Here is the problem:

Leaders typically have a high level of confidence in themselves because that’s what got them where they are. The “I got it” phrase reflects their ability to be self-sufficient and not need help from others. Oopsy daisy! I just set off the “Danger, Danger, Will Robinson” button. These days a leader that doesn’t need insight, feedback, knowledge, or resources from others is on a suicide mission.

Even the leaders that have a high EQ will need as much help and support as they can find! More on that later.

In the meantime, with the promise to keep these shorter (that I consistently break), I leave you with a good book that I encourage you to start reading: “Leadership and Self-Deception” by The Arbinger Institute. There’s a lot of humble pie in that one to chew on.
